Q4-What have you learned from your audience feedback?

After completing my project i made sure got people from my target audience to look at and give me feedback on my work.

In the early stages of creating my trailer i benefited greatly from the findings of the polls i constructed as these helped me decide what genre trailer i should produce and the title of my trailer. The video below shows some young men watching my trailer, as i was producing a comedy trailer it was good to see. This video also confirmed that my trailer was suitable for my target market as the people in the video werent critical of my trailer and they seemed to enjoy watching it. My media teacher also noted though that my trailer could be better if the mise en scene was better, as my characters clothing doesn’t necessarily reflect golfing attire. It is something i would definitely address next time round. People i showed my trailer to also noticed it was not in widescreen which is something i should try and have a go at. But on the positive side viewers of my trailer found it amusing and good to watch, with few real complaints about the content or the diegetic music. So i am pleased with the final outcome of my trailer as are the majority of people who have seen it. The audience for my trailer expected it to be funny as my trailer was meant to be in the comedy genre.

The people i asked to view my film poster generally thought it looked good and professional, but they were crutucak of the large amounts of blank white space which was left in the background, they were expecting a bolder colour to make the poster standout more. The poster looks professional though and there are very few aspects i would consider changing as i believe the tagline and the photo work well together, + nobody had any criticism of the actual layout of the poster. My teacher also didnt really see any room for improvement after i showed him the finish product so i was pleased with the outcome of my poster and the positive feedback it received.

My film poster was difficult to create, i relied heavily on audience feedback on whether or not my magazine cover looked authentic enough as i was not creating my own magazine i was borrowing the total film magazine title and i needed reassurance that my work looked like a cover that total film would produce. I therefore asked people to tell me whether or not my cover looked good enough, but people noticed the clear difference in standard, but they were able to notice some similarities with my cover. The people i asked to look at my magazine generally expected a neat organised cover with a close up photo of somebody which is genuinely what i tried to produce. My film magazine was not as successful as my film poster as more people were critical of my film magazine and if i could do it again i would make sure i devoted more time to the creation of my film magazine cover. With my film poster i always knew in my own mind what i was going to try and create so i only benefited from the feedback after production.

Q2-How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

All three texts that have been created are focused around the one man and lead actor Sam Griffiths, he is the main feature of the magazine as well as having his photo at the centre of the poster, and he also takes the leading role throughout the trailer and he features in nearly all the scenes.

My film poster is designed just to make people aware of the film it has no mention of a release date it just has details of the production company, the film tile and a catchy tagline at the top to get people interested and thinking about the film. The film trailer itself is a short trailer which tells you everything you need to know about the film, with details of the release date, the title, the main actors, the production company as well as featuring some funny moments which would be from the upcoming film, this is the main selling point of the trailer it is supposed to be funny and attract the potential audience towards the film as well as generate some interest which will hopefully lead to viewers of the trailer building it up via word of mouth.

The magazine issue is theoretically supposed to give readers of film magazines an insight to the movie as well as give the potential viewers a chance to learn more about the actors that star in the film. Hopefully the magazine would be published at a couple of weeks before the film will be released as it will help generate interest as well as giving an introduction to Sam Griffiths who is not a world renowned actor yet, and he is unlikely to have built up a large fan base, so the magazine would help the potential viewers get to know him a little bit better.

When looking at film magazine covers I found out that it was essential to get at least a close up photo shot of the main character as all the magazines I found in my research consisted of a big name star taking centre stage on the magazine poster. I therefore found it necessary for my magazine cover to follow these conventions.

The trailer, magazine and poster all have similar effects in the way that they will all be released in advance of the films release, they should all generate interest within my target market as well as word of mouth spreading between people who have seen the forms of media and their friends who haven’t. I believe the trailer is the most significant part of the pre-film advertising, as people are more likely to see the trailer rather than see my poster or read a magazine cover, plus with YouTube trailers have become more accessible to the public, and cheaper for film producers who can put their trailer on YouTube which will be cheaper than buying airtime to advertise on TV. Also YouTube is one of the most popular websites in the world with millions of users every day. Already my trailer on YouTube has had hundreds of views, the poster and film magazine would be used to generate interest and encourage more people to watch my trailer, the posters would be displayed in city centres and they would get people to sub-consciously think about my film.

To see what the target audience thought of my media texts I put them on my blog as well as putting my work on the social network site facebook in an effort to see what people thought about my work. Putting my work on facebook helped as most of the people I am friends with on facebook would be part of my target audience.  The majority of feedback on my trailer, criticized the fact that it was not in widescreen, but people generally found the content amusing, and enjoyed watching the trailer. The poster was generally well-received as well by the people i showed it to, they commented on how it followed the conventions of most other movie posters, the people could also see where i had drawn my ideas from when i showed them the Caddyshack and Waterboy movie posters. With my magazine my reviewers were more critical, partly due to the visually unpleasing photo, but also with a magazine cover it is hard to make it funny especially when i adopted the structure of a very serious film magazine company

The target audience

Every trailer created is aimed at a target audience, If it didnt have a specific target market the trailer isnt going to encourge people to go watch the film the trailer is advertising.  The target audience for my trailer will primarily be people who have an interest in sport as the film trailer is generally portraying a spoof movie about golf. The trailer is also aimed at men more than women as men tend to have more of an interest in sport generally, also the film is more of a straight-up comedy, and looking at cinema viewing figures from 2008 men go to the cinema more than women with 20% of all males over the age 0f 7 going to the cinema at least once a month with the figure being 17% for females. Also the statistics indicated that teenagers and young adults visit the cinema most frequently. In the UK in 2008,  41% of those aged 15 to 24, along with 31% of those aged 7 to 14 and 22% of those aged 25 to 34, reported attending the cinema at least once a month. These statistics suggest the largest market is that of young people so i will adapt my trailer and film idea to be more appealing to a younger audience.
